Hedgerow, Enamel on Canvas, 15″x 30″

After spending any time in England, it is impossible not to fall in love with Hedgehogs. The three little crab apples on the left are reference to the old legend of the hedgehog and the fruit. Dating as far back as Pliny the Elder, and again referenced in medieval bestiaries and illuminated manuscripts from the 13th century onwards, hedgehogs are shown rolling on and impaling fruit to carry back to their dens. Although its ridiculously false, its still a fabulous idea that tickled me.

Most of the books represented here come from my mother’s collection of turn-of-the-century British gardening books, and the Latin on the flower frog, Sine Amore, Nihil best Vita translates: Without love, life is pointless. …Wait for it….
